Mangifera indica (Mango) is a large evergreen tree native to South Asia and among the oldest cultivated fruit trees, grown in India for over 4,000 years. In tropical climates it can reach 60-80 feet with a broad crown of glossy leaves. Small yellowish flowers appear in spring, followed by fleshy drupes known worldwide as mangoes.

Fruit shape varies from oval to kidney-shaped, with skin that may remain green or ripen to yellow, orange, or red. The flesh is juicy and aromatic, sometimes fiberless and sweet, sometimes more resinous depending on type. Mangoes are eaten fresh, dried, blended, or cooked, making them one of the most versatile tropical fruits. Some people experience irritation on the lips from the peel, so fruits are usually eaten peeled.

The tree thrives in full sun and well-drained soil in warm climates, hardy only to USDA Zones 9-11. With hundreds of named cultivars, Mangifera indica remains one of the world s most widely grown and culturally important fruit trees.

The Super Alphonso mango is a selected improvement of the famous Indian Alphonso, bred for enhanced productivity and fruit size while maintaining the rich flavor for which the original variety is known. It shares the same aromatic, sweet, and buttery flesh but tends to produce larger and more uniform fruits. The tree grows moderately with a dense, rounded canopy and adapts well to tropical and subtropical climates, making it suitable for both home gardens and small orchards.

The fruit is medium to large, oval-shaped, and develops a smooth golden-yellow skin with a light orange blush near the stem when ripe. The flesh is deep yellow, fiber-free, and highly aromatic, offering a complex flavor that balances sweetness with a hint of acidity. Super Alphonso ripens in mid-season, slightly later than standard Alphonso, providing an extended harvest. It performs well in USDA Zones 10-11 and should be protected from frost, tolerating short drops into the 30F.

Mango tree 36-8, Super Alphonso, Grafted (Mangifera indica)

Super Alphonso aka India, or Zill 36-8. Original name 36-8 was for a seedling of Zill-80 from the breeding program of Gary Zill. Jakarta may have been its pollen parent. It has since been re-named Super Alphonso and may have had several other names at varying points of time, including India.
The fruit is roundly shaped like its maternal parent, and its flavor is somewhat reminiscent of Zill-80 as well though perhaps superior and with more of a hint of Indian spice hence another name India. The fruit does not taste like Alphonso however. 36-8 trees appear to have been steady and heavy producers.
The fruit does not ripen well on the tree, but when harvested mature green and allowed to ripen over the course of 7-10 days or so, the eating quality is excellent.
This mango could have commercial potential if it can prove resistant to fungal diseases in South Florida, which we will be evaluating for going forward.
