Baobab, also called the Tree of Longivity, can live for 5000 years. Pass this remarkable plant in your family from generation to generation! Regarded as the largest succulent plant in the world, the Baobab tree is steeped in a wealth of mystique, legend and superstition wherever it occurs in Africa, being a tree that can provide food, water, shelter and relief from sickness. In the nature the massive, usually squat cylindrical trunk gives rise to thick tapering branches resembling a root-system, which is why it has often been referred to as the Upside-down Tree.
Planting directions: pot into 6" container or shallow bonsai dish using well drained bonsai mix, like Adenium soilless mix. Water well and put in bright light, full sun is preferable. Let soil dry between waterings. Fertilize once a month during warm season, with a balanced granulated fertilizer and Sunshine boosters: SUNSHINE-BC for fast growing thick trunk, and SUNSHINE SuperFood. As the plant grows, step up into bigger container after proper trimming of roots and branches.
Thanks to its internal water supply, the Baobab Tree can take several months without soil. The plants are shipped bare-rooted to save your shipping costs.

Showy red-flowered rare Powdepuff, very fast growing and spacey shrub. It is very cold tolerant, survived 3 nights of 25F hard freeze in our garden. Great solution for subtropical gardens to get exotic look and yet survive occasional freezes.
It is a many-stemmed dense shrub, the branches grow from ground level, and the leaves consist of tiny crowded leaflets that fold together at night or by touch. The fine, feathery and large flowers are a deep scarlet color and borne among the green foliage from spring to autumn. Great bonsai plant.

How to choose easy to care for plants for those dry spots?
Dry areas can be a problem for most plants. If you have spots in your landscape that just don’t get much water, be sure to choose plants that thrive in those conditions. There are several drought tolerant trees that you can plant for shade. If this is really a dry area, consider planting a drought tolerant ground cover for shade around those trees for a nice contrast and an easy to care for spot. If planting in an area that receives regular irrigation or rain, you should plant on a mound so that water will naturally run away from your plants. Be sure to use ground covers in this area to help with erosion.
Do I need to use different soil for these plants?
It is best to use a very well draining soil for plants that prefer to stay on the dry side. Avoid using peat as it retains water. Add some perlite to your existing soil to help increase drainage properties. If you plan on growing your plants in a container, add a layer of pebbles to the bottom of the container and be sure to use a cactus type mix such as our Desert Rose (Adenium) Soilless Mix for the best drainage. As the name implies, Adeniums love this soil and are great drought tolerant flowers. Learn what your plants like as they will need to be watered at some point. Many do well with water once per week and others require you to watch the soil and water only when dry.
Can I grow fruit trees in dry areas?
Yes, there are some fruit trees that actually do quite well in dryer areas. One drought tolerant fruit tree is the Pomegranate. They like hot and dry and then prefer a little water when it is cooler. Figs, Guavas, and Loquats are also quite drought tolerant and would prefer to be a little dryer than wet all the time. If you are looking for drought tolerant shrubs, the Euphorbia family does great with little water. There are many to chose from and they are all a bit different. They also make great container plants.
