Auntie Lilli's South Sea Salad Bele Tree, known by the Latin name of Abelmoschus manihot, isn't a tree at all. It is in the botanical family Malvaceae, same as okra and the woody-stemmed hibiscus. It may have the growth of a shrubby tree due to its tropical nature, as it is native to tropical portions of Asia and also northern Queensland and can grow up to 9 feet tall when given the right conditions.
The South Sea Salad Tree has been a traditional green vegetable in Fiji for some time. It is grown as an tender ornamental perennial in Hardiness Zones 8-10. It does have a beautiful flower, but lesser known is the fact that both its flowers and leaves are delicious as well as nutritious! The laves are high in Vitamins A and C and Iron, and have 12% protein by dry weight. Leaves and flowers can be eaten raw in salads, and the leaves can also be lightly cooked similarly to spinach. Delicious, nutritious and a beautiful flower - talk about a perfect edible plant for tropical/subtropical landscapes and temperate annual gardens and patios.

Aloe Vito (also known as Kamikaze) is a striking aloe with a distinct texture, featuring pinkish-red shingles that cover each gray-green leaf. This unique succulent makes an excellent ornamental addition, with fleshy, elongated leaves edged with small red teeth and dotted with rough, light green bumps. When exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods, the plant takes on a beautiful reddish-brown hue. In winter, its orange-red flowers bloom on a tall stalk. Aloe Vito is an ideal plant for decorating your home's windowsills.
This rare cultivar was created by Kelly Griffin, an American hybridizer, and is sometimes referred to as Kamikaze in certain sources.

This crinum is native to the Eastern Cape of South Africa, and has a large clump of wide, glossy green foliage topped with 2' tall spikes of soft pink, fragrant, goblet-shaped flowers. Crinum moorei is atypical in that it prefers to grow in light shade.

Cherry of the Rio Grande, Eugenia involucrata. Small multi-branching tree or shrub. In the spring it is one of our early flowering tropical fruits and often blossoms in the first part of March. Blooming and fruiting season continues for several months into Summer. The delicious cherry, beautiful dark red to purple, produced soon after flowering. When ripe the the fruit can turn almost black and have a full cherry-like flavor. The plan is ideal for limited space landscapes since it can be kept as a bush or even as a container specimen and still produce adequate quantities of fruit. A relatively hardy plant, it can tolerate as low as low 20's F when mature.

Grumichama. This compact tree has beautiful glossy green leaves up to 3-4 inches long and one to two inches wide, with leathery texture, and the new growth is a wine reddish color before it matures. Fruits follow quickly in about four weeks after flowering. They are about one inch or larger, purplish black in color with large seeds and excellent melting flesh that has almost the flavor of a northern cherry. Eaten fresh and used in jelly. The Grumichama makes an excellent container plant and will fruit quite nicely in a five to ten gallon-size container.

Produces masses of flowers in February to April. Absolutely spectacular for winter and spring bloom with dense clusters of starry white flowers completely covering the handsome glossy foliage. Individual flowers are rose colored on the outside and a plant in full bloom can perfume a large area.
