Surinam Cherry, Pitanga - vigorous and quick to fruit, often producing the same year or by the next. This plant is a seedling from Black Surinam Cherry Lolita, known for its very sweet, juicy fruit with no aftertaste. The fruit is relatively large at about 1-1.2 inches, starting red and turning deep black when fully ripe. In our garden, these seedlings have come true to seed with black fruit, though some reports suggest they may occasionally produce red fruit as well.

Jaboticaba. One of the most popular native fruit of Brazil. Grape-like purple fruit with a thick skin and delicious melting pulp somewhat resembling Northern Black Currant in flavor. Small white flowers grow right on the trunk ("cauliflora" means "flowers growing on trunk). Trees grow very slowly and due to small leaves and dwarfish growth habit are often used as bonsai. Jack-edak is a highly recommended variety grown in TopTropicals garden from a seedling of Cheena (Jackfruit x Chempedak) that fruited for us within 3 years from planting. The fruit (20-25 inches size) is probably the best we ever tasted! It is super sweet, crunchy and has a rich, pleasant, excellent flavor. It has very little latex which makes it easy to handle when cutting up. The tree produces at the very base of the trunk, so you can prune it as short as you want. Our tree survived light frosts as well as 48 hours of 3ft flooding, with no damage!
