A tiny taste of cherry flesh isn't generally the concern, but cherry pits, stems and leaves should never be given to cats. The plant contains cyanogenic compounds, and the pits are also a choking and intestinal-blockage hazard.

Besides, cats are obligate carnivores. Your cat may be curious about your fruit, but cherries aren't something they need on the menu.
So admire the cherries. Sniff the cherries. Steal the human's chair while they're eating the cherries.
Just stay out of the pits. 🍒

🍴 7 delicious ways to use Surinam Cherry: quick-n-fun exotic recipes 🍒

If your Surinam cherry tree (Eugenia uniflora) is loaded with fruit and you’re wondering what on earth to do with all of it, start here! These little ribbed cherries have a bold sweet-tart tropical flavor that can go far beyond eating them fresh. From jam and lemonade to salsa, BBQ sauce and frozen treats, here are 7 delicious ways to turn a big Surinam cherry harvest into something seriously good.

1. 🍒 1. Surinam Cherry Jam
   Remove the seeds and gently cook the fruit with sugar and a splash of lemon or lime juice. Simmer until thick and glossy. The tartness of Surinam cherry makes a bright, flavorful jam for toast, biscuits, yogurt, or cheese boards.
2. 🍒 2. Surinam Cherry Lemonade
   Mash or blend ripe cherries, strain out the seeds and pulp, then mix the juice with fresh lemon or lime juice, cold water, and sugar or honey to taste. Serve over plenty of ice. Add sparkling water for a fizzy version.
3. 🍒 3. Surinam Cherry Crumble
   Remove the seeds and toss the cherries with a little sugar and cornstarch. Spread them in a baking dish and top with a crumbly mixture of oats, flour, brown sugar, and butter. Bake until bubbling and golden, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
4. 🍒 4. Surinam Cherry BBQ Sauce
   Cook seeded cherries with onion, garlic, brown sugar or honey, vinegar, and a little tomato paste. Add smoked paprika, black pepper, and chili if you like some heat, then blend until smooth. Brush it over grilled chicken, pork, or shrimp.

   Chop ripe, firm cherries and combine with red onion, cilantro, jalapeño, lime juice, and a pinch of salt. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes so the flavors come together. It's especially good with grilled fish, shrimp, chicken, or tacos.

💡 Surinam cherry trick

Use fully ripe, deep red to almost black fruit whenever possible. Underripe fruit can have a much stronger resinous flavor. Removing the seeds and letting the fruit sit chilled for a while can also make the flavor more pleasant.
For the eventual "all 7 dishes on one table" image, these seven should also work nicely visually - jam, bright drink, crumble, glazed meat, fresh salsa, popsicles, and chutney will all look clearly different.

Usually furry cats don't, but hairless cats are one of the exceptions where clothing can actually serve a practical purpose. Sphynx cats aren't wearing sweaters just to make the rest of us look underdressed.
Without a normal fur coat, they lose body heat more easily and often appreciate extra warmth, especially in an air-conditioned house.
A soft, comfortable sweater can help a hairless cat stay cozy, provided the cat is happy wearing it and can move freely.

🐾 Why do Sphynx cats feel so warm to the touch?

They aren't necessarily running a dramatically higher temperature; without fur between your hand and their skin, you feel their body heat directly.

🐾 Why hairless doesn't mean maintenance-free?

Without fur to absorb and distribute skin oils, Sphynx cats may need regular skin and ear care.

Does a Mango Tree Need Special Soil?

A customer recently asked us a very practical question: "Do you have a blend of soil that you recommend to incorporate with native soil when planting a mango tree in its permanent spot?"
The answer depends on what is already under your feet.

❓ Q: Does a mango tree need special soil?

✅ A: Usually, no. Improve your native soil rather than replacing it.

Mangoes are surprisingly tolerant of less-than-perfect soil. They can grow very well in sandy and relatively poor soils, provided the drainage is good.
At our farm in Sebring, Florida, our native soil is very sandy. We plant mangoes and other fruit trees directly into it, usually mixing the existing soil with some composted manure or other well-composted organic matter.
The organic matter helps sandy soil hold moisture and nutrients better while still allowing the excellent drainage mango roots appreciate.

❓ Q: Should I fill the planting hole with rich potting soil?

✅ A: No. This is a common mistake.

Don't dig a hole and replace all the native soil completely with beautiful, rich potting mix. You've essentially created a little underground container surrounded by completely different soil.

Instead, work with the soil you have. If it is sandy and low in organic matter, amend it moderately with composted organic material and use the improved native soil around the root ball.

And remember: drainage matters more to a mango than having perfectly rich soil.

❓ Q: Should I fertilize when planting?

✅ A: Yes, but don't pile concentrated fertilizer directly against the roots or trunk.

After planting, we use slow-release fertilizer around the root zone.

Our economical choice for fruit trees is Top Dress Slow Release Fertilizer 8-3-9.
For longer controlled feeding, Green Magic Controlled Release Fertilizer is our preferred choice. It costs a little more, but one application feeds for approximately six months.

❓ Q: What is the most important thing when taking the tree out of its pot?

✅ A: Leave the roots alone.

Don't shake off the soil. Don't wash the roots. Don't pull the root ball apart just because you've heard you're supposed to "loosen the roots."
The tiny feeder roots and root hairs are doing the important work of absorbing water and nutrients. The less you disturb them during transplanting, the easier the transition will be.

Move the intact root ball into its new home, backfill around it, water thoroughly, and let the roots explore the surrounding soil themselves.

💡 The simple rule: Good drainage + your native soil + some organic matter + proper fertilizer.
Mango trees don't need an elaborate designer soil blend. In fact, after growing mangoes in Florida's sandy soil for years, we'd rather improve what nature gave us than replace it.

And whatever soil you have, don't forget the other half of planting correctly: protect that root ball.
