Hardee Red was the most important commercial varieties years ago. It has a shape of Russel, with elongated neck, but the color is intense red. Very productive tree, large size fruit, creamy taste. Very similar to Hialiah Red, Lara variety.

The Reed avocado was named after James S. Reed in California. It has been around since the late 1940’s. The fruit is large, weighing over a pound and round in shape. It has a large seed, but plenty of edible flesh. The skin remains green even when ripe. It is described by some as the best tasting avocado, buttery, bold, rich and nutty with an oil content of about 20%. It is a type A avocado, but fruits consistently year after year without other avocado trees around. It has an upright growth habit and can be kept to around 15 feet with pruning. The branches do tend to droop horizontally. It is not considered a cold hardy variety and will suffer leaf damage below freezing with some damage to small branch tips at 26 degrees F. The tree flowers in May/June and the fruit is best left on the tree for over a year until the following summer all the way into October.

Petrea volubilis - Queen's wreath, Sandpaper vine. A twining vine with rough green leaves and spectacular tall clusters of purple flowers. It likes warm and humid conditions. The flowers come in raceme reaching over 1 foot long, the flowers lasts a couple of days but the blue calices remain much longer, slowly turning gray.

Root Beer Plant, Acuyo, False Kava-Kava. Close relative of Piper methysticum (Kava-Kava), and Piper nigrum (Black Pepper), this herb originated from Tropical America and grows also in the South Pacific. Large-leaved perennial, known for its leaves, which are used for their spicy aromatic scent and flavor, some liken to root beer, others to anise-clove. This species is easily identified by its huge leaves which can grow over a foot long in older specimens. The leaves are chopped and used for flavoring, as well as used whole, as wrappings for meats, tamales, etc. P. auritum is very often confused with Piper methysticum (Kava-Kava), and probably has some similar effects.

Rare small shrub from tropical and southern Africa with 1 inch tubular red flowers in spikes. Blooms over many months in summer. Will grow to 3 feet high and wide in bright shade with rich, moist soil. Ruspolia hypocrateriformis has smooth leaves with angled stems, compared to the slightly hairy leaves and round stems of Ruspolia seticalyx. Ruspolia hypocrateriformis is also a more robust plant. Otherwise, they are very similar and easily misidentified. It is ideal for attracting butterflies as a nectar plant.
