A screened patio can give indoor cats the best of both worlds: fresh air, sunshine, birds, frogs, plants and all those fascinating outdoor smells and sounds, without roaming outside.
But there's one important catch:

🐾 Regular patio screen isn't cat-proof.

A determined cat can claw, push or eventually tear through screening. Our simple solution was to add wire mesh over the regular screen, creating a second, much stronger barrier.
Sturdy welded wire or hardware mesh is ideal. We've also used chicken wire as an extra barrier, and it has protected our screened catio successfully for years.

Add wire mesh for cats.
Then add shelves, climbing spots, beds, shade and fresh water.

Don’t Cut Off That Anthurium Flower! Here Is What Happens Next

Most people grow Anthuriums for their bold flowers or dramatic foliage. But sometimes, the absolute best part of the show happens after the bloom begins to fade.
Our Anthurium Black Dragon recently produced an incredible fruit stalk packed with brilliant, glowing red berries. Against its almost-black leaves, the fruiting spike is arguably even prettier than the original flower.

Wait - Anthuriums Make Fruit?

They certainly do.
What we casually call an Anthurium "flower" is actually a two-part inflorescence made up of a colorful spathe and a central spike called a spadix. The tiny, true flowers are packed tightly along that spadix.

If those miniature flowers are successfully pollinated, the spadix won't just dry up and die - it will slowly swell and transform into a heavy fruiting spike covered in jewel-like berries.

💡Pro Tip: Before reaching for your pruning shears, check the base of the spadix. If it stays firm and starts swelling instead of turning brown and dry, leave it alone. Something exciting is on the way.

From Gothic Dark to Electric Red

Anthurium ‘Black Dragon’ is famous for its deeply pigmented, near-black foliage, but its fruit is anything but subtle.
As the berries mature, they turn a vivid crimson and push outward from the spadix, turning the spike into what looks like a stem encrusted with rubies.
And those berries aren't just decorative eye candy. They are full of baby Dragons!

What Is Inside an Anthurium Berry?

Inside each ripe berry is a viable seed ready to grow. Unlike typical garden seeds, tropical Anthurium seeds are fleshy and recalcitrant - they hate sitting in paper packets for months. But when planted fresh straight from the fruit, they germinate with incredible speed.

We harvested and planted seeds from our own Black Dragon berries, and within just a few weeks, tiny green sprouts emerged.
They don't look particularly fearsome yet - Black Dragon seedlings take their sweet time developing those iconic dark leaves. But given warm moisture and filtered light, they grow steadily.

Watch Them Grow: From Tiny Sprouts to Gothic Giants

This is where the magic really happens.
Over time, those tiny green seedlings mature, producing increasingly larger, darker, and more dramatic leaves. Watching a plant go from a single seed hidden inside a red berry to a full-sized, moody masterpiece is one of the most rewarding parts of tropical gardening.

Seed-grown plants also bring wonderful genetic surprises. Because each seedling carries a unique combination of traits, individual plants may vary slightly in leaf shape, texture, or darkness. Occasionally, you might even spot unusual color variation or subtle variegation popping up in the tray.

Is the Fruit Better Than the Flower?

The flower usually gets all the glory, but the fruiting stage might actually take the crown.

You get weeks of spectacular contrast - glowing red berries against dark, velvety leaves - followed by the reward of harvesting fresh seeds to grow an entire collection of new plants. One parent plant suddenly becomes a whole nursery of baby Dragons.

So the next time your Anthurium finishes blooming, hold off on trimming that spent spike. Your plant might just be getting started.

🐾 Daily Cat Lesson: Cats vs. Dogs - Who Trained Whom?

Dogs and cats both became our companions, but they took very different routes.

🐕 Dogs were deliberately domesticated.
Humans selected dogs over thousands of years for jobs: hunting, guarding, herding and companionship.

🐈 Cats largely moved themselves in.
Early farming communities attracted rodents. Rodents attracted wildcats. Humans benefited from having the cats around, and cats benefited from the food supply. It was a pretty good arrangement.

🐕 Dogs were bred to work with us. Cats weren't.
That helps explain why dogs tend to look to humans for direction, while cats are famously more independent problem-solvers.

🐈 But cats DO pay attention to us.
Research shows cats can recognize familiar voices, learn our routines and form strong social bonds with people. They simply communicate differently from dogs.

A dog thinks:
"What are we doing today?"
A cat thinks:
"What are YOU doing today, and how does it affect me?"

🐾 And perhaps the biggest difference:

Dogs were domesticated by humans.
Cats seem to have negotiated a partnership.

👽 Electric-Green Bat Flower - Incredibly Rare Green Isle

Most plant collectors recognize the famous Black Bat Flower, Tacca chantrieri. Dark wings. Long dangling whiskers. A flower that looks like something escaped from a tropical cave.
But then there is this one. Tacca chantrieri 'Green Isle'.
Same species. Completely different look.
Instead of the characteristic dark purple-black display, Green Isle produces an extraordinary green inflorescence, with broad wing-like bracts and ridiculously long green whiskers hanging below. In good light, the color can look almost electric green.

💚 Is that really one giant green flower?

Not exactly.
What looks like the "bat wings" are actually bracts - modified leaves surrounding a cluster of much smaller true flowers. Below them hang the long thread-like structures usually called whiskers.

On the ordinary Black Bat Flower, the whole arrangement is so dark that it creates the famous bat silhouette.
On Green Isle, you can actually see the architecture.
Green wings. Little flowers tucked in the center. Long green whiskers cascading underneath.
It's wonderfully weird.

💚 So where did Green Isle come from?

That's where the story gets a little mysterious.
'Green Isle' is known in specialty horticulture and is listed by the Royal Horticultural Society, but even the RHS currently gives its botanical name status as unresolved.

It has circulated as an unusual green selection of Tacca chantrieri, but there isn't much published documentation about its original selection or introduction.
In other words, the plant exists. Its history is much harder to find.
And that seems appropriate for a plant this strange.

💚 Same Bat Flower, same jungle preferences

Don't let the alien-looking flower fool you. Tacca chantrieri is a tropical forest-floor plant.
It likes warmth, high humidity, filtered light and moist but well-drained soil. In nature the species grows in tropical forest habitats rather than baking in open sun.
And it isn't a bulb in the usual sense. Tacca is a rhizomatous perennial, growing back from its underground rhizome and producing those big, glossy tropical leaves before sending up its bizarre flowers.

💚 We finally have a few

We've grown Black and White Bat Flowers for years, but Green Isle is one we don't see very often.
Right now we have a small number of established plants in our collection - and seeing that electric-green flower in person is even stranger than seeing it in photographs.
Black Bat Flower looks gothic.
White Bat Flower looks ghostly.
Green Isle looks like the bat landed on another planet. 👽

You bought him beds. Blankets. Cushions.
He chose the bathroom sink.
Why do cats love sinks?

• 🐾 It's perfectly cat-shaped.
  The curved bowl cradles the body on all sides. Cats often enjoy snug spaces because they feel secure and protected.
• 🐾 Porcelain stays cool.
  On a warm day, a ceramic or porcelain sink can pull heat away from the body, making it a very comfortable cooling spot.
• 🐾 It's a great observation post.
  Bathroom sinks are usually elevated. Cats love places where they can relax while still keeping an eye on what's happening around them.
• 🐾 And then there's the faucet.
  Many cats are fascinated by dripping or running water. Cats can prefer moving water, and a sink occasionally produces fresh water right on demand.

So when Timo fills the entire sink and looks completely comfortable...
Don't ask why he's in your sink.
The better question is why you installed a perfectly cat-shaped bed in the bathroom.
