🐾 Daily Cat Lesson: orphaned kittens finding the Right Door

The Top Tropicals Cat Distribution System has apparently decided our inventory was getting dangerously low.
Five kittens plus a one-eyed mama, delivered directly to our gate tis morning. Someone definitely knew the address.
We've had kittens dropped off here before, so apparently word has gotten around:
If you have a box of cats, Top Tropicals is the address.

But this little family has an interesting mystery.
The kittens are clearly different ages. They don't look like one litter, and it seems unlikely that Mama produced two litters back-to-back.
So there may be another explanation.

🐾 Did you know that nursing mother cats adopt orphaned kittens?

A mother cat may nurse and care for kittens that aren't biologically hers.
If another mother disappears, dies, or can't care for her babies, a lactating female may accept them right alongside her own.
So this mama may be raising somebody else's babies together with hers.

We don't know their story. We may never know.
And that brings us to the human part of today's Cat Lesson.

🐾 Find the right door

At first, finding a sick mama and five babies abandoned in a box makes you angry. Who does that?
But we also don't know the story of the person who brought them.
Maybe they couldn't afford veterinary care. Maybe they couldn't keep six cats. Maybe they found them somewhere and had absolutely no idea what to do.
What we do know is that they didn't dump them in the woods or leave them beside a highway.
They brought them to a place where they apparently knew someone would help.
And, well - they were right.

Mama already has a vet appointment tomorrow morning so we can find out what's happening with her eye. The babies are safe, fed and together.
So perhaps today's lesson is for Cat People and People People:

If you find an animal you cannot keep, don't simply turn it loose and hope for the best. Find the right door. ❤️

A shelter. A rescue. A veterinary hospital. A neighbor who is known for helping animals. A crazy plant nursery with a suspiciously large cat population. 😹
Sometimes helping an animal doesn't mean you have to take it home.
Sometimes it simply means making sure it reaches someone who can.

🥭 5 Best Dwarf Mango Trees for Small Yards

You don't need a huge yard to grow mangoes. Some varieties naturally grow much more compactly than others and can be maintained as small backyard trees with regular pruning.
If space is tight, these are five varieties worth considering.

One of the best-known compact mangoes for home gardens. Pickering has a naturally small, bushy growth habit and can be maintained at an easy picking height. The fruit is sweet, rich and fiberless, with a distinctive tropical flavor.

Julie is famous for its naturally dwarf growth habit. The tree grows slowly and stays compact, while producing exceptionally aromatic fruit with a rich, distinctive flavor.

Diamond is a good choice when you want an unusual mango without giving up half the yard to the tree. Its relatively compact growth makes it easier to maintain than many vigorous varieties.

This Thai mango is valued for its very sweet fruit and manageable growth habit. With regular pruning, Okrung can be maintained as a practical backyard tree.

🌳 Dwarf doesn't mean it stays tiny

Even a "dwarf" mango is still a tree. Don't expect it to stop growing at six feet by itself.
The trick is to start with a naturally compact variety and prune it regularly while it is young. Keeping the canopy low and branched also makes harvesting much easier.

💡 Important distinction: a compact mango isn't necessarily a good long-term container mango. Growing in the ground gives the roots much more room and generally makes maintaining a healthy, productive tree easier. If permanent container growing is your goal, choose a variety specifically suited to it.

Not necessarily. Cats quickly learn when and where food becomes available. An unattended bowl, another cat walking away, the sound of a package opening - opportunity detected.

This matters in multi-cat homes. One cat may eat the correct portion, then quietly finish everyone else's.
So sometimes "I'm starving!" really means:
"I noticed food nobody is currently guarding."
