🍴 What to do with green papaya? 7 quick-n-Fun Exotic Recipes
🍈 A storm knocked down your Papaya tree, leaving you with a pile of hard, green fruit? Or perhaps your papayas simply refuse to ripen? Don't throw them away! Green papaya is a delicious vegetable, popular in Asian and tropical cuisines. Its mild flavor and firm texture make it perfect for soups, curries, stir-fries, pickles, and even crispy fritters. Forget waiting for sweetness - here are 7 tasty ways to enjoy your green harvest!
- • 1. Filipino pickled green papaya (Atchara)
Shred 4 cups green papaya, sprinkle with 1 tablespoon salt, and rest 30 minutes. Squeeze dry. Mix with shredded carrot, bell pepper, ginger, and garlic. Pour over a warm mixture of 1½ cups vinegar, ¾ cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon salt. Refrigerate overnight before serving. Keep refrigerated. - • 2. Thai green papaya salad (Som Tam)
Shred firm green papaya and toss with cherry tomatoes, green beans, garlic, chili, lime juice, fish sauce, and a little sugar. Add roasted peanuts. Crunchy, tangy, spicy, and refreshing! - • 3. Garlic green papaya stir-fry
Cut green papaya into thin strips. Stir-fry with garlic, ginger, chili, soy sauce, and sesame oil for 5–8 minutes until tender-crisp. Serve with rice or grilled meat. - •🍲 4. Chicken and green papaya soup (Tinola)
Sauté chicken with onion, garlic, and ginger. Add broth and simmer until chicken is nearly cooked. Add cubed green papaya and cook until tender. Finish with spinach or moringa leaves. - • 5. Green papaya coconut curry
Cook onion, garlic, ginger, turmeric, and curry powder in a little oil. Add cubed green papaya and coconut milk. Simmer 15–25 minutes until tender. Serve over steamed rice. - • 6. Crispy green papaya fritters
Mix 2 cups shredded papaya with 1 egg, ¼ cup flour, chopped scallions, garlic, and salt. Pan-fry small spoonfuls until golden on both sides. Serve with sweet chili sauce. - • 7. Beef stew with green papaya
Brown 1½ lb cubed beef with onion, garlic, and ginger. Add 2 cups beef broth, soy sauce, and pepper. Simmer 1½–2 hours until beef is nearly tender. Add 3 cups cubed green papaya and carrots. Cook another 15–25 minutes until tender. Finish with lime juice.
👍 Bonus: Nature's meat tenderizer!
Raw green papaya contains papain, an enzyme that helps break down meat proteins. Add a little grated green papaya to a meat marinade, but don't overdo it - too much can make meat mushy!
🍲 Storage tip:
Whole, firm green papayas may keep refrigerated for 1–2 weeks. For longer enjoyment, make refrigerator pickles.
