Leucaena leucocephala - seeds

Big tree > 20 ftSmall tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterModerate waterWhite/off-white flowers

Wild Tamarind, Lead Tree. Arborescent deciduous small tree or shrub, flowers numerous, axillary on long stalks, white, in dense global heads 1" across. It is used as a shade plant in coffee, rubber, cacao, and cinchona plantations, for reforestation, windbreaks and firebreaks. Necklaces are made with the seeds. Leadtree is valued as an excellent protein source for cattle fodder, consumed browsed or harvested, mature or immature, green or dry. The nutritive value is equal to or superior to alfalfa. Adapts well to a wide range of tropical and subtropical environments, especially seasonally dry tropical areas. Some seedlings less than one-year old will produce viable seed. Seeds remain viable from several months to several years. The hard waxy seedcoat makes scarification necessary before planting. The easiest and most common method is to scald seed in boiling or near boiling water. Boiling water is poured directly over the seed and allowed to cool to room temperature (preferably overnight), followed by sowing. Alternatively, small numbers of seed may be scarified by nicking which involves the use of a knife or secateur to clip off a small portion of the seed coat at the end opposite the pod attachment scar (hilum).

Large shrub 5-10 ftFull sunModerate waterUnusual colorRed/crimson/vinous flowersYellow/orange flowers

Nodding Pincushion. Leucospermum belongs to the protea family and is indigenous to South Africa. The inflorescences consist of a large number of small flowers. It is the stiff protruding styles of the flowers which are the source of the common name "pincushion" for this genus. Only a few large, hard, nut-like seeds are produced by each inflorescence. In their natural environment the seeds are collected by ants, stored in the soil, and germinate only after a fire has killed the mature plants and returned the nutrients back to the soil.
Barely cover the seeds with a mixture of coarse sand and soil mix. Keep warm and damp with bright light. Avoid high humidity. Needs fresh air circulation. Slow germinating.

Licuala peltata (elegans) var. Sumawongii - seeds

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterOrnamental foliagePalm or palm-like

Elegant palm. This understory palm has very large, nearly completely circular, pleated, deep green leaves on long, dainty petioles that are so geometric in shape, they barely look real. This is the magnificent and much desired, entire-leaved variety of Licuala peltata, one of the most beautiful species. It is a moderately sized palm with usually only a short trunk, and its crown holds as many as 15 huge, flat, undivided fan leaves up to 7 ft in diameter! Native of Thailand and Malaysia, this species is much more tolerant of cool conditions than nearly any other Licuala and it will thrive in subtropical and tropical conditions and possibly even in protected spots in some frost-free, warm temperate climes, of course always out of the wind. This collectible palm is one of the most ornamental and prized.

Licuala ramsayi var. Tuckerii - Australian Fan Palm

Small tree 10-20 ftFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterOrnamental foliagePalm or palm-like

Very rare palm, much desired by collectors, the Australian Fan Palm likes a rainforest situation. A shady position and plenty of moisture is all what is needed to grow Licuala ramsayi successfully. This is one of the most cold tolerant of the Licualas, but is still a tropical/sub-tropical plant, and definitely not frost hardy. As a youngster it prefers quite heavy shade, but its an emergent plant so adults are sun-hardy. It is a very slow grower, but its still a highly desirable plant for a warm shady nook.
