One of the most desirable symbols of Tropics, Alpinia purpurata, red ginger, also called ostrich plume and pink cone ginger, are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly colored red bracts. They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower on top. Red Ginger grows in Hawaii, and many Central American nations, including Belize. It is also found in Samoa, where it is the national flower, and is locally called "teuila." It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates. It tends to like to be well watered and not left to dry out. Ginger can also be grown as a houseplant and its cut flowers can be used in arrangements.

Chinese ginger, Fingerroot. Boesenbergia rotunda is a medicinal and culinary herb from China and Southeast Asia. It is widely used in Javanese cuisine in Indonesia. In Thai cooking it is called krachai. In the west it is usually found pickled or frozen. Kra Chai is used as an antiflatulent, expels air and nurtures strength. Used as a male tonic, vigor, health promotion, longevity, aphrodisiac.

Variegated Spiral Ginger. Originally from South America, this ginger is very popular in Hawaii and Florida. The actual name is C. arabicus variegata and it is labeled Costus amazonicus variegata almost everywhere. Spiraling stems rise with a strong white variegation and topped with elegant pure white flowers with yellow centers. Takes both sun and shade, moist soil and lots of water.

Costus igneus, Chamaecostus cuspidatus - Insulin Plant, Fiery Costus, Spiral Flag.
It is known as the insulin plant because it may help lower glucose levels for some people with diabetes. Researchers believe it can help lower blood sugar level. The plant has large, fleshy, smooth turmeric-like spiral leaves that are dark green on top with light purple undersides. The undersides of these large, smooth, dark green leaves have light purple shade. The leaves are spirally arranged around the stem, forming attractive, arching clumps arising from underground rootstocks. The maximum height of these plants is about two feet. The flowers are orange in color, appear to be cone-like heads at the tips of branches. Flowering occurs during the warm months.

Weeping Blue Ginger, Blue Pendant. Unusual zinger-looking perennial with dark green foliage with arching stems. Heads of dark electric-blue flowers top tall, jointed stems with glossy heavy leaves faintly banded silver and toned purplish-blue beneath. Rare color for tropics!

Unusual color for tropics - Deep Sapphire! Blue Ginger is a wonderful, tropical-looking plant which resembles ginger in growth and habit. It is a great addition for a shade garden, can be grown as a container and indoor plant. In warm environment, the plant is evergreen and doesn't go dormant.

White Ginger, Butterfly Ginger Lily. This is the most fragrant of all gingers and one of the symbols of Hawaiian Paradise. In the summer it bears fragrant flowers that resemble butterflies. It is popular in Hawaii and the Pacific Islands were it is used in leis or singly worn in the hair or behind the ear. It also makes a good cut flower great for scenting the home. It is a tough plant, a light freeze may kill the tops, but it will come back in the Spring.

With its attractive long green leaves with a slight fuzziness, this ginger has open long spikes of pastel yellow flowers with a beautiful heady aroma. Similar in appearance to the White Butterfly ginger (H. coronarium). Exquisitely fragrant!

Plump, bountiful berries with irresistible flavor. Relatively modest-sized tree yields plump, black fruit with a tantalizingly sweet-tart taste. Super rare ginger! The edible flowers have pleasant, spicy fragrance and flavor. This rare specimen plant is from the collection of Mark Hooten. It has bright coral-like flowers, and finally bloomed for us in January 2025. We will be posting more pictures soon.
Species close related to Burbidgea. Riedelia coralina is so rare that published information about this species and photos are extremely hard to find. Most references to it appear in specialized collector circles rather than in widely available horticultural or botanical literature.

Cardamom is a principal ingredient in curry powders, and is used to flavor confectioneries, liqueurs and chewing gums. This South Indian perennial is popularly grown for use in Indian and Asian Cuisine. The seeds are dried (and often crushed) for adding unique flavor to meals and curries. This plant is cold sensitive, requires moist soil and will grow best in a shady warm location. Cardamom makes an attractive addition to the subZingiber tropical landscape.

Spice Ginger, Cooking Ginger - Plant this ginger in the garden to produce your own fresh ginger. This plant is deciduous, leaves die back in winter and grow back in spring.

Rare unique variety - Indonesian Sunset. Flowers are multi-colored with bronze/golden highlights, some gardeners call it Mandarin Allamanda. Very showy flower, slightly fragrant. Large plant, blooming size.

Red Button Ginger, French Kiss. Spectacular red ginger, with bright red button-like flower cones almost year-round. The yellow flowers that emerge from the red cones are edible. The plant can withstand a light frost for short periods of time but will stop blooming.

The name refers to the colorful raspberry colored stem, but that's not the only colorful thing about this Spiraling Ginger. The leaves are dark green, long and glossy with velvety deep purple undersides. The inflorescence is a vivid red with tight bracts and bold yellow flowers. The butterflies love to drink the nectar from the flowers. This is a large vigorous ginger, growing up to 5-6 ft tall.

Red Siam Tulip, rare hybrid. This plant produces an excellent cut flower last up to about 14 days. If placed in a slightly shaded position, flower on the plant can remain for up to 3 months.

Bolivian Sunset Gloxinia. Excellent houseplant or ground cover. The density of the foliage and flowers makes a spectacular show. Excellent houseplant; even when not in bloom the attractive foliage is evergreen and attractive all seasons. Grown outdoors in dappled shade with plenty of water, the density of the foliage and flowers makes a spectacular show. May die down in the spring, then comes back during the rainy season. This is a great fall to early winter flowering perennial. It spreads rapidly from rhizomes and forms a dense ground cover. You can give flowering starts of it from your garden as Christmas presents.

Jahangir (Jehangir ) variety - flesh is light yellow with green skin. Somewhat larger than a Carrie. Dwarf tree and fiberless fruit.

Marmelade Mussaenda - flower looks so tasty, you wanna eat it! This mussaenda is a hybrid between M. philippicca Dona Luz x M. flava and is named in resemblance a brilliant sunset of yellow peachy colors. It is very vigorous hybrid that grows quickly to 7 to 9 feet. The shrub is covered with showy yellow and salmon deepening to yellow and orange sepals. They are smaller than many other hybrids, but they are very showy on the bush.

Hawaiian Sunset Bell. The stunning flower has splendid rich tones that are a marvel to see! This tropical vine is definitely a must in any tropical collection since it has so many great features: fast growing, takes from full sun to deep shade, beautiful tri-color sunset-bright scented flowers, large tropical-looking velvet leaves, blooms sporadically year round, relatively cold hardy, can be grown in container and easily controlled. This variety commonly has been called "Salmon" but it fact it is bright orange. We changed the name to avoid confusion with another variety "Apricot" (item 5973) that is closer to salmon color.
One of the most rewarding flowering plants! Stunning display of orange flowers year round, from winter through spring and summer. Unlike other tecomarias, it is more of an upright shrub with naturally compact shape and doesn't shoot long leggy branches. You don't have to prune it, it keeps naturally rounded, bushy shape. Attracts butterflies.

Pine cone ginger, Shampoo Ginger. All parts of this ginger are spicy fragrant. The cone shaped flowers are long lasting and useful for cut flower arrangements. This plant is most widely known around the world as the Shampoo Ginger for the milky substance in the cones, and it is in fact used as a shampoo in Asia and Hawaii, and as an ingredient in several commercial shampoos.
Pinecone ginger is considered a canoe plant, that is, a plant introduced throughout the Pacific by the ancient Polynesian settlers.
