Parijat: the flower that refuses to face the sun

💔 Parijat: the flower that refuses to face the sun 🌙

It blooms after sunset, perfumes the darkness, and carpets the ground with flowers by morning. No wonder this little tree inspired legends of love and heartbreak.
Some flowers greet the morning sun. Parijat does the opposite.
As darkness falls, its white flowers open, revealing brilliant orange centers and releasing an enchanting fragrance. By sunrise, they've fallen, carpeting the ground like tiny white stars.
Why does this tree seem unwilling to face the sun?

🕊 The princess who loved the Sun God

Legend tells of Princess Parijataka, who fell in love with Surya, the Sun God. When her love went unreturned, she died of heartbreak.
From her ashes grew a tree whose flowers opened only at night, refusing to face the sun. Each morning, they fell like tears.
Its botanical name, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, means night-flowering sad tree.
Few trees express sadness so beautifully!

🕊 A flower brought from heaven

Another Hindu legend tells of a celestial Parijat tree growing in Indra's paradise.
Krishna brought it to Earth, where it sparked jealousy between his wives, Rukmini and Satyabhama.
In one version, Krishna planted it in Satyabhama's garden, but its fragrant flowers fell into Rukmini's courtyard!
Parijat remains sacred in Hindu traditions. Its fallen flowers are gathered for offerings, an unusual distinction when freshly picked flowers are generally preferred.

🕊 The secret of the orange center

Look closely! White petals surround a vivid orange tube, like a tiny glowing candle.
For centuries, these orange tubes have been used to produce natural dyes for silk and other fabrics. Their color comes from carotenoid pigments.
And despite its common name, Night Jasmine, Parijat isn't a true jasmine. It belongs to the olive family, Oleaceae, alongside Jasminum.

🕊 A perfume tree for small gardens

Native to South Asia, Parijat grows as a small shrub or tree, generally 5–10 feet tall in cultivation.
Its greatest attraction isn't perfect symmetry. It's stepping outside in the evening to discover the garden filled with perfume!
Plant it near a patio, walkway, or window to enjoy its nighttime fragrance. And don't rush to sweep up the fallen flowers. That fragrant morning carpet is half the magic!

🕊 Easy to grow, easy to love

· ☀️ Light: Full sun to partial shade for abundant blooms.
· 💧 Water: Moderate watering, good drainage.
· 🌱 Soil: Well-drained, enriched with organic matter.
· ✂️ Pruning: Trim to encourage branching and compact growth.
· ❄️ Cold: Best in frost-free climates. Freezing temperatures may damage growth.
· Containers: Great for patios. Move indoors or protect during cold weather.
· Feed regularly during active growth to encourage flowering.

🕊 Bring a little heaven into your garden

Parijat asks for little space but gives something extraordinary: heavenly perfume after dark and a shower of delicate flowers every morning.
A tree born from heartbreak, brought from heaven, and loved for centuries.

Best tropical fruit trees for pots and 7 secrets to container success

Best tropical fruit trees for pots and 7 secrets to container success

🍒 Best tropical fruit trees for pots and 7 secrets to container success

No backyard? No problem! Turn your patio or balcony into a miniature tropical orchard with fresh figs, guavas, mulberries, and even mangoes!
Many exotic fruit trees thrive in pots. Some stay naturally compact, others respond well to pruning, and a few fruit while still quite small.
The secret is choosing the right plants!

Small trees, big harvests

• Dwarf Mulberry (Morus) - Favorites include Dwarf Everbearing, Dwarf Burgundy, and Issai. Compact with pruning and generous with harvests. Our Burgundy Berry fruits for months!
• Fig Tree (Ficus carica) - A container classic! Tolerates restricted roots, responds to pruning, and produces excellent crops.
• Guava (Psidium guajava) - Fast-growing, productive, and easy to shape. Flowers on new growth, ideal for pruning.
• Barbados Cherry (Malpighia) - Bushy plant with pink flowers and vitamin C-rich red fruits. Fruits repeatedly in warm weather.

Tropical favorites in pots

• Mango (Mangifera indica) - Choose Condo varieties. With pruning, grow a productive little mango tree instead of a giant.
• Avocado (Persea americana) - Dwarf varieties like Wurtz, Fuerte, and Joey are best. Provide good drainage and a large pot.
• Starfruit (Averrhoa carambola) - Delicate foliage, pink flowers, and star-shaped fruits. Grafted trees can fruit young.
• Jaboticaba (Plinia spp.) - Produces grape-like fruits directly on its trunk and branches. Slow growth suits containers.
• Surinam Cherry (Eugenia uniflora) - Glossy leaves, ribbed red or purple fruits, and a compact habit.
• Grumichama (Eugenia brasiliensis) - Slow-growing evergreen with glossy foliage and dark, cherry-like fruits.

Unusual fruits for adventurous gardeners

• Dune Soapberry (Deinbollia oblongifolia) - At Top Tropicals, we've seen seedlings flowering in just eight months, even in small pots! Sweet fruits resemble lychee or longan.
• Blackberry Jam Fruit (Randia formosa) - Compact shrub with fragrant white flowers and fruits filled with blackberry-jam-flavored pulp.
• Peanut Butter Fruit (Bunchosia spp.) - Orange-red fruits with soft, sweet pulp reminiscent of peanut butter. Easy to prune.
• Miracle Fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) - Tiny red berries make sour foods taste sweet! Loves acidic soil and filtered light.

Fruiting shrubs and climbers

• Pineapple (Ananas comosus) - Easy in pots. Compact, ornamental, and productive.
• Dragon Fruit (Selenicereus) - Climbing cactus with spectacular flowers and colorful fruits. Needs support.
• Passion Fruit (Passiflora edulis) - Perfect for a sunny patio with a trellis. Prune regularly.
• Dwarf Banana (Musa) - Dramatic tropical accent. Choose a compact fruiting variety and a large pot.

Seven secrets to container success

1. Choose wisely. Dwarf, grafted, or compact plants are best.
2. Drainage matters. Never let roots sit in water.
3. Airy mix. Heavy soil suffocates roots.
4. Enough light. Most fruits love sun; some prefer filtered light.
5. Feed regularly. Use controlled-release and/or liquid fertilizer with micronutrients.
6. Prune for productivity. Keep trees compact and branching.
7. Protect from cold. Move sensitive plants into shelter.

Your tropical orchard starts with one pot!

Start with a Dwarf Mulberry or Grumichama. Add something unusual, like Miracle Fruit or Peanut Butter Fruit.
Soon, your patio might become your favorite place to harvest breakfast!
A small tree with a good harvest beats a giant tree you can't reach!

Daily Dose of Cat: How Simon became a daddy - meet Zhu-Zhu, the Bumblebee

🐾 Daily Dose of Cat: How Simon became a daddy - meet Zhu-Zhu, the Bumblebee 🐝

Remember that mysterious box of miscellaneous cats someone dropped at the Top Tropicals gate?
Five kittens of different ages, plus one-eyed Marie, who turned out to be a kitten herself.
Well, meet Zhu-Zhu. The smallest member of that miscellaneous collection.

🐝 The kitten nobody noticed

One by one, his sisters were adopted. But poor Zhu-Zhu was so tiny and shy that people coming to choose a kitten barely noticed him.
Eventually, he was the only one left.
So, following One-Eye Marie and Toothless Simon, he moved from our Fort Myers cat family to B-Farm, where 13 PeopleCats were waiting.
And that's when his life changed!

🐝 How Simon became a daddy

Remember Simon, our former street tomcat? The one we rescued skinny, sick, and almost toothless?
Well, Simon took one look at Zhu-Zhu and decided he was his son.
After all, they came from the same hood...
Simon wasn't taking any chances.
He immediately assumed full parental responsibility.

Now he follows Zhu-Zhu everywhere. Grooming him. Playing with him. Making sure he's well fed. Protecting him from grumpy PeopleCats who might hiss at the newcomer.
And keeping him out of trouble.

🐝 Meet Zhu-Zhu, the bumblebee!

Then Zhu-Zhu discovered the catio.
And the quiet, tiny kitten transformed into a buzzing, zooming, unstoppable little hooligan!
Up the cat trees! Down the cat trees! Into the swings! Attack the toys! Chase everything that moves!
That's how he got his name: Zhu-Zhu (Жужик), from the word жужжать - to buzz like a bumblebee.
And poor Daddy Simon? He's suddenly got a full-time job keeping up with this little tornado!

🐾 Cat lesson: Can tomcats be good fathers?

Surprisingly, YES!
Male cats aren't generally known for raising kittens. In the wild, mothers usually do the parenting, and many tomcats have little involvement.

But some males, especially friendly, socialized cats, show remarkable caregiving behavior toward kittens - even kittens that aren't biologically theirs. They groom them, cuddle with them, play gently, and sometimes act as protectors.

This is called alloparental care - caring for young that aren't necessarily your own.
Remember how nursing mother cats sometimes adopt kittens from other litters?
Male cats can surprise us with their parenting skills, too!

We don't know whether Simon is Zhu-Zhu's biological father. But one thing is certain:
Zhu-Zhu has found his daddy. And Simon has found someone to love.
❤️ And did we mention Zhu-Zhu has a HEART-shaped marking on his side?
Apparently, he was born for this job!
