🐾 Daily Cat Lesson: orphaned kittens finding the Right Door

The Top Tropicals Cat Distribution System has apparently decided our inventory was getting dangerously low.
Five kittens plus a one-eyed mama, delivered directly to our gate tis morning. Someone definitely knew the address.
We've had kittens dropped off here before, so apparently word has gotten around:
If you have a box of cats, Top Tropicals is the address.

But this little family has an interesting mystery.
The kittens are clearly different ages. They don't look like one litter, and it seems unlikely that Mama produced two litters back-to-back.
So there may be another explanation.

🐾 Did you know that nursing mother cats adopt orphaned kittens?

A mother cat may nurse and care for kittens that aren't biologically hers.
If another mother disappears, dies, or can't care for her babies, a lactating female may accept them right alongside her own.
So this mama may be raising somebody else's babies together with hers.

We don't know their story. We may never know.
And that brings us to the human part of today's Cat Lesson.

🐾 Find the right door

At first, finding a sick mama and five babies abandoned in a box makes you angry. Who does that?
But we also don't know the story of the person who brought them.
Maybe they couldn't afford veterinary care. Maybe they couldn't keep six cats. Maybe they found them somewhere and had absolutely no idea what to do.
What we do know is that they didn't dump them in the woods or leave them beside a highway.
They brought them to a place where they apparently knew someone would help.
And, well - they were right.

Mama already has a vet appointment tomorrow morning so we can find out what's happening with her eye. The babies are safe, fed and together.
So perhaps today's lesson is for Cat People and People People:

If you find an animal you cannot keep, don't simply turn it loose and hope for the best. Find the right door. ❤️

A shelter. A rescue. A veterinary hospital. A neighbor who is known for helping animals. A crazy plant nursery with a suspiciously large cat population. 😹
Sometimes helping an animal doesn't mean you have to take it home.
Sometimes it simply means making sure it reaches someone who can.
