  Cats evolved as predators. Hunting requires short bursts of intense energy, followed by long periods of rest. Your house cat may be hunting a bowl of Fancy Feast instead of a mouse, but the ancient operating system is still installed.
• 🐾 Do cats dream?
  Very likely! Cats experience REM sleep, the stage strongly associated with dreaming in humans. Those twitching whiskers, moving paws and tiny noises during sleep may be signs that something interesting is happening in Cat Dreamland.
• 🐾 Why do cats sleep curled into a ball?
  Curling up helps conserve body heat and protects the belly and other vulnerable areas. When a cat sleeps stretched out, belly exposed, it often means she's warm, relaxed and feels safe.

❄️ White Champaka Did Better at 25F Than the "Hardier" One

Sometimes plants don't read the rulebook.
One of the biggest surprises following Florida's sharp February freeze was our White Champaka (Magnolia × alba). By all accounts, it should have been one of the first tropical trees in our garden to collapse. Instead, it became our ultimate winter winner.

❄️ Two Nights at 25F

In February 2026, our garden in Sebring, FL endured a record freeze: two consecutive nights around 25F and two weeks of deep cold. The damage across our tropical collection was immediate:

Yellow Champaka (Magnolia champaca): Lost all foliage, suffered tip/branch burn, and required a few weeks to bounce back.

White Champaka (Magnolia × alba): Lost upper leaves, pushed fresh green growth within days, and resumed blooming by March.

❄️ Why This Result Makes No Sense

In botanical literature, Magnolia × alba is widely listed as more cold-sensitive than its yellow-flowered parent. Based on hardiness charts, we expected the yellow Champakas to hold the line and the White Champaka to fail.

The reality in the ground was the exact opposite. While the yellow Champakas needed a few months to regrow, the White Champaka barely paused.

❄️ The Microclimate Caveat

Does this single event make White Champaka a guaranteed 25F-hardy tree? Not necessarily. Real-world cold tolerance hinges on several critical variables:

• Tree Maturity: Older, established root systems withstand freeze duration much better than young saplings.
• Microclimates: Slight variations in wind exposure, canopy cover, and soil moisture drastically alter cold impact.
• Duration vs. Absolute Temp: A quick dip to 25F behaves differently than a sustained 12-hour freeze.

❄️ The Takeaway

Plant hardiness zone charts offer a baseline, but post-freeze garden walks reveal the truth. Seeing a supposedly tender tropical survive 25F with minimal leaf loss - while "hardier" neighbors took heavy damage - is a real-world result worth acting on.

Cat people, naturally, gave it the more appropriate name: making biscuits.

  It starts in kittenhood. Nursing kittens knead their mother's belly with their paws, which helps stimulate milk flow. Many cats carry the behavior into adulthood.
• 🐾 Why do adult cats still do it?
  Usually because they're comfortable and relaxed. A soft blanket, a favorite bed - or your stomach - can trigger that old kitten behavior.
• 🐾 Is kneading a sign of affection?
  When a relaxed cat climbs onto you, purrs and starts making biscuits, it's generally a very good sign. Your cat feels comfortable and secure with you.
• 🐾 Cats also knead with scent.
  Their paws contain scent glands, so kneading can leave behind a little chemical calling card. In other words, while he's lovingly massaging you, he may also be labeling you: PROPERTY OF CAT.
• 🐾 Why do some cats drool while kneading?
