Perfecting a Mango Tree

TopTropicals.com

Q: I recently purchased a Mangifera indica - Coconut Cream Mango from you and would like to know if it is possible to keep this in a large pot rather than putting it in the ground. If so, I have a few questions:
1. How large would you expect this variety to get?
2. What are the ideal growing conditions? Full sun, partial sun, etc...?
3. What is the ideal soil?
4. Any specific watering directions for ideal growth?

A: Coconut Cream mango tree has a moderate growth. We've planted one in our garden 4 years ago and it is still under 10 ft tall. This variety should be well suitable for container culture.
1. Keep the branches trimmed after fruiting is over. Mango trees can be grown in 15 to 25 gal containers and can be trimmed under 7-8 ft high.
2. All mango trees need full sun, the more sun the better.
3. Mango needs very well draining soil, ideally with lots of bark and perlite. We recommend our professional soilless mix or a similar formula.
4. Mango trees hate wet feet, and prefer to stay on a dry side: make sure soil in a pot doesn't stay wet; allow it to dry a little between the waterings.
Remember to apply Mango Food fertilizer during warm season for vigorous growth and heavy crop!

Mangos in portable garage

A word from our customer: I wanted to let you know how happy I was with my latest order, Mesk Mango. It arrived this past Saturday in EXCELLENT condition only losing 3 leaves while in transit to Morgan City, LA. I like the idea of the root ball dry, loosely packed and no Styrofoam peanuts compared to the old wet tightly packed root ball.
The attached pictures show where my container Mango collection (list below) will spend this winter so I don't lose any of my prized possessions! Again, thanks for supplying a great product and happy you survived the storm! 2 Nam Doc Mai, 2 Jakarta, 2 Valencia Pride, 2 Keitt, Pina Colada, Orange Sherbet, Cat Hoaloc, Spirit of 76, Carrie, Glenn, Coconut Cream, Mesk - in 7 gallon container during winter. 6-Nov-17.

Healthy Plants: Q&A from Mr Booster

Mango leaves and fertilizing

Q: I received a mango tree we ordered last week (I am in California) and am trying to make sure we take care of it properly. I noticed the corners of some leaves have began drying out. I wanted to see if there was anything else we should be doing or if it is something normal. Overall the tree looks good and the leaves have perked up, but I noticed the dry tips on a handful of leaves. Any help is appreciated! I have not fertilized in the pot yet or applied the mango sunshine booster.

A:Your mango tree looks pretty healthy, and these dry leaf tips may be caused by overall shipping stress. You have dry air in California, and temperatures may be getting up, this may cause additional drying effect. You may start fertilizing with a liquid fertilizer, it will help the plant to get stronger and grow faster - then heat and dry air won't be a problem as soon as the plant becomes better established and hopefully go into a bigger pot soon, or in the ground. Make sure to provide regular water if you have hot dry summers.
