How to Make Noni Juice Youll Actually Enjoy Drinking
🍾 How to Make Noni Juice You'll Actually Enjoy Drinking
For centuries, Noni has been treasured throughout the Pacific Islands as a traditional wellness fruit, and today many gardeners grow it so they can make their own fresh juice at home. But most first-time growers have no idea what to do with the fruit once it ripens.
You planted a Noni tree. It finally starts producing fruit - and then comes the big question:
Now what?
Many first-time growers are surprised by the smell of ripe noni. The fruit develops a strong aroma as it ripens - that's completely normal. Around the tropical world, people have been making noni juice for centuries, and there are several easy ways to make it much more pleasant to drink.
Start with ripe fruit
Wait until the fruit turns creamy white to almost translucent and becomes soft to the touch. That's when it's ready. Green fruit is too firm and much more bitter.
The traditional way
In Polynesia and many Pacific islands, ripe fruits are simply placed in a clean glass jar and allowed to ferment naturally for several weeks. The juice slowly separates from the fruit and collects at the bottom. Strain it, refrigerate it, and enjoy in small amounts.
Fresh juice
Don't want to wait? Blend ripe noni with a little water, then strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth. Fresh juice has a stronger flavor but keeps more of the fresh fruit character.
How to make it taste better
Very few people drink noni juice straight. Try mixing it with:
- Pineapple juice
- Orange juice
- Coconut water
- Honey
- Fresh ginger
- Turmeric
These ingredients soften the strong flavor while making a refreshing tropical drink.
Freeze it
Pour juice into ice cube trays and freeze. Add a cube or two to smoothies whenever you want.
Smoothie idea
Blend together:
- 1-2 tablespoons noni juice
- Pineapple or mango
- Banana
- Coconut water
- Ice
The tropical fruits mellow the flavor while keeping all the goodness of fresh noni.
If you're growing a Noni tree, don't let the unusual smell scare you away. Once you know how to prepare the fruit, you'll discover why this remarkable tropical plant has been valued for generations throughout the Pacific and Southeast Asia.
