What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

This mango is a new release from Zill, derived from Edward parentage and is similar in taste and flavor characteristics to Alampur Baneshan variety. The large green fruit holds a wonderful rich sweet flesh. The tree is prolific and so far has done well here in SWFL.

Cac is a selection from Vietnam, where it was singled out for consistent yields, a beautiful appearance and superb eating quality. The fruit are ovate and are 18 oz with an uncommonly smooth skin. The fruit are greenish-yellow with a lemon yellow flesh with no fiber. The flavor is uncomplicated, blending the elements of citrus and peach with a gentle floral bouquet. The tree is vigorous, with an open and leggy growth habit that requires close attention to branch tipping and shaping. The fruit have good disease tolerance and ripen in the middle of the mango season.

Carrie Mango - the flavor is by far the most outstanding feature of this variety. It has absolutely no fiber and extremely rich in flavor, sweet, aromatic and a pure pleasure to eat. You will savor every mouthful! Its compact size makes it an excellent dooryard tree that requires minimal care. Both fruit and tree have little to no problem with fungus or disease. Lack of color and firmness are the only shortcomings of this superb variety. To determine where to pick, look for a subtle yellow color at its base. Do not let the fruit drop from a tree, or it will bruise since it's completely fiberless. Many people agree that this is the best tasting mango in existence!

Diamond. A mango developed by Fairchild, its unique consistency makes it a collector must have. It has a great taste not found in the dessert type mangoes. Dunkan (Duncan) Mango - this variety has exceptional production, disease resistance and eating quality. The fruit are oblong and are of uniform shape throughout the canopy, with an average size of 20oz. The color is a solid canary yellow with no blush. The skin is thick, waxy and resistant to handling damage, with a soft, tender, and juicy yellow flesh. The flesh is velvet-smooth and bright yellow, with an exceptionally sweet, slightly tangy, refreshing flavor, with a hint of citrus and a fruity aroma. The fruit ripen in June-July in Florida and are tolerant of anthracnose infection, making them suitable for production under humid, rainy conditions. Production is heavy. The tree itself is vigorous and open in its growth habit, but highly manageable. It can be maintained at a height and spread of 8 to 10 ft with a minimal of care and pruning.

A traditional juice mango selected in Jamaica but not well known away from the Island. Common in markets in Jamaica and other parts of Caribbean. The fruit is oblong, with a smooth greenish to bright yellow skin, red blush on the shoulders, overlaid with large white dots and a heavy wax coating. 12-20 oz. The deep orange flesh is firm and juicy, with some fiber. Flavor is rich, aromatic, spicy, with distinctive tropical and coconut flavor notes. Very good for fresh juices.
Relatively cold hardy variety. See more info about Mango varieties.

Edgar is an Edward x Gary cross. The tree is average in growth with a mid-season ripening time. Beneath the yellow skin is a bright orange flesh. It is fiberless, but holds its shape well. This mango has been the subject of many great reviews and is your classic mango taste with a juicy finish.

The most outstanding feature of this variety is the perfect blend of sweetness and tartness thanks to its Indo-Chinese / Indian background. It is also firm, yet has no fiber. Another good trait is a long-lasting season. So, after many of the early varieties are gone, you will still be savoring the sweet tartness of this exceptional variety. It is easy to determine when to pick because the fruit will turn yellow at its base.
