What is air-layered plant

Q: What is an air-layered plant?

Air-layering is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation woody ornamentals and fruit trees, when branches, while still attached to the parent plant, start producing roots where they come in contact with a rooting medium. Minimized water stress and stable nutrient levels make this method successful. Air-layering is used when grafting is not possible for a number of reasons.

Benefits of the air-layering:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a branch from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for the air-layered plant)
  • creates larger plant much faster unlike when growing from cuttings

The season differs slightly from that of Hasya, beginning in February and ending in May.

Baobab starter, 3 years old. Perfect gift plant!
Baobab, also called the Tree of Longivity, can live for 5000 years. Pass this remarkable plant in your family from generation to generation! Regarded as the largest succulent plant in the world, the Baobab tree is steeped in a wealth of mystique, legend and superstition wherever it occurs in Africa, being a tree that can provide food, water, shelter and relief from sickness. In the nature the massive, usually squat cylindrical trunk gives rise to thick tapering branches resembling a root-system, which is why it has often been referred to as the Upside-down Tree.
Planting directions: pot into 6" container or shallow bonsai dish using well drained bonsai mix, like Adenium soilless mix. Water well and put in bright light, full sun is preferable. Let soil dry between waterings. Fertilize once a month during warm season, with a balanced granulated fertilizer and Sunshine boosters: SUNSHINE-BC for fast growing thick trunk, and SUNSHINE SuperFood. As the plant grows, step up into bigger container after proper trimming of roots and branches.
Thanks to its internal water supply, the Baobab Tree can take several months without soil. The plants are shipped bare-rooted to save your shipping costs.

What is grafted plant

Q: What is a grafted plant?

Grafting is a method of vegetative (or asexual) propagation where a piece of one plant (scion) selected for its flowers or fruit and containing the desired genes to be duplicated is inserted into a piece of another plant (rootstock), with a strong vigorous root system, usually a seedling.

Benefits of the graft:

  • making a clone of the parent plant ensures the same cultivar, since most fruit trees will not come true to seed
  • taking a scion from a mature plant reduces time to flowering and fruiting (from 10-12 years for a seedling to 2-3 years or less for a grafted plant)
  • introducing dwarfing, hardiness, disease and pest resistance.
  • easier propagation method when other means like cutting or seed is not successful

Alpinia purpurata - Pink Cone Ginger

Small shrub 2-5 ftShadeSemi-shadeRegular waterPink flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowers

One of the most desirable symbols of Tropics, Alpinia purpurata, also called ostrich plume and pink cone ginger, are native Malaysian plants with showy flowers on long brightly colored pink bracts. They look like the bloom, but the true flower is the small white flower on top. Red Ginger grows in Hawaii, and many Central American nations, including Belize. It is also found in Samoa, where it is the national flower, and is locally called "teuila." It prefers partial shade and moist humid conditions, although it can tolerate full sun in some climates. It tends to like to be well watered and not left to dry out. Ginger can also be grown as a houseplant and its cut flowers can be used in arrangements.
