This small robust clump-forming plant is hardy and easy to grow, tolerant of full sun or semi-shade. It grows best in moderately moist soils but is also drought tolerant once established. The herbaceous foliage will reach 2-5 ft in height and is crowned with spectacular white, off-white, blue, lavender or purple flowers in loose umbels. The blooms are short-lived but the plant will bloom again in the same season.

For best results, Camassia sp. or Indian Hyacinth should be grown in USDA Zone 5-8, in moist soil and with regular water. In colder regions, Camassia can be grown in pots and brought into a greenhouse or sunroom during winter for protection. In the garden, create a soil mound for better drainage, and mulch the planting area when established to help hold the moisture.

The Camassiasp is an easy care plant that should be fertilized annually with a balanced fertilizer. Deadheading faded flowers and cutting back the foliage will help to keep the plant tidy. Divide plants every 3-5 years to avoid overcrowding, or collect and sow seeds in containers in spring. With minimal effort, you'll be rewarded with an attractive, long-lasting display of blooms in your garden.
