Platanus sp, commonly referred to as Plane Tree or Sycamore, is a big tree native to southeastern Europe to western Asia. It can grow taller than 50 feet and requires full sun. The plant requires moderate water and is deciduous with attractive foliage. The plant is grown in USDA Zone 5-10.
Plane Tree can also be used for ethnomedical purposes. The leaves are astringent and vulnerary and a decoction is used to treat dysentery. A cream made from the leaves can be used to heal wounds. The bark boiled in vinegar can be used to treat toothache.
This plant requires full sun and plenty of air circulation, and will benefit from regular fertilization in the spring and summer. Pruning back the branches in the late winter encourages a denser habit and better air circulation.
