The Black Sheep Is WHITE! A Golden Penda Surprise

The Black Sheep Is WHITE! A Golden Penda Surprise.

You never know what surprises nature has in store when you grow plants from seed!
Something exciting happened at Top Tropicals this week. Among hundreds of brilliant golden flowers, we spotted something completely unexpected. A little seedling blooming creamy white!
The black sheep of the family. Except this odd sheep is WHITE!

• ⭐️ Golden fireworks with a surprise

Golden Penda (Xanthostemon chrysanthus) is one of our favorite Australian flowering trees. Its spectacular golden flowers look like miniature fireworks, with hundreds of long, glowing stamens. And they smell wonderful - sweet, almost like apple blossoms!
The tree is naturally compact in our Florida gardens, perfect for containers and small spaces. But what makes it especially fun to grow is how incredibly young it starts flowering.
At Top Tropicals, our seed-grown plants can bloom within their first year. Some are barely 3-4 inches tall, just a few months old, and already covered in flowers!

• 🌱 One seedling decided to be different

While admiring our latest batch of blooming seedlings, we noticed one little rebel. Instead of the usual brilliant yellow, its flowers were delicate ivory-white.
Same batch of seeds. Same growing conditions. But a different flower color!
That's the magic of growing plants from seed. Every seedling carries its own genetic combination, and occasionally an unexpected trait appears.
Sometimes these variations are simply interesting. Sometimes they become the beginning of a beautiful new cultivar!

• 🔬 Could this become a new variety?

White flowers aren't unknown in the genus Xanthostemon. Several Australian species, including X. verticillatus, naturally produce beautiful creamy-white blooms. - Australian National Botanic Gardens
An unusual seedlings have even given rise to named Golden Penda cultivars. But our little ivory-flowering X. chrysanthus is an exciting discovery of its own. Will the unusual color remain stable? Can we reproduce it through cuttings or seeds? That's what we're going to find out!
Now comes the fun part. We'll watch this little plant closely, see whether it continues producing ivory flowers, and experiment with propagation.
Will its offspring inherit the pale color? Will they return to golden yellow? Could we get something in between?
Purple or blue? Well, that's probably wishful thinking!
Seedlings don't necessarily inherit their parent's unusual characteristics, so there are no guarantees. But that's exactly what makes experimenting so fascinating.

• 🌿 The joy of growing from seed

Unlike flowering trees that make you wait years, Golden Penda gives us the opportunity to observe new generations surprisingly quickly.
And that's why we love growing plants from seed. Every little seedling is a possibility. Most grow up looking like their parents. Occasionally, one decides to break the rules.
Our little white sheep may or may not become a named cultivar someday. But it has already given us something wonderful - the excitement of discovery!
Want to grow your own golden fireworks? We still have a few rare Golden Penda plants available at Top Tropicals.
Who knows what surprises your garden might bring? 😯
