Mangifera indica - video

Super Alphonso aka India, or Zill 36-8. Original name 36-8 was for a seedling of Zill-80 from the breeding program of Gary Zill. Jakarta may have been its pollen parent. It has since been re-named Super Alphonso and may have had several other names at varying points of time, including India.
The fruit is roundly shaped like its maternal parent, and its flavor is somewhat reminiscent of Zill-80 as well though perhaps superior and with more of a hint of Indian spice (hence another name India). The fruit does not taste like Alphonso however. 36-8 trees appear to have been steady and heavy producers.
The fruit does not ripen well on the tree, but when harvested mature green and allowed to ripen over the course of 7-10 days or so, the eating quality is excellent.
This mango could have commercial potential if it can prove resistant to fungal diseases in South Florida, which we will be evaluating for going forward.

Baptiste is a popular Haitian dessert mango. It is a mid-season fruit here in SW FL, but in its native climate it can fruit year round. It is a small, manageable tree which makes it a great choice for space limited gardeners. The fruit is around 14 ounces with a mottled yellow skin when ripe. It has a firm, sweet flesh which holds its shape in fruit salads and other desserts well.

This exotic variety has extremely sweet, rich and unique taste. It is very popular in Jamaica as well as in Western India, where it is known as Pairi (Pahari). To determine when to pick, look for a slight yellow color on bottom of fruit.

Cac is a selection from Vietnam, where it was singled out for consistent yields, a beautiful appearance and superb eating quality. The fruit are ovate and are 18 oz with an uncommonly smooth skin. The fruit are greenish-yellow with a lemon yellow flesh with no fiber. The flavor is uncomplicated, blending the elements of citrus and peach with a gentle floral bouquet.
