Eugenia calycina is a small to medium-sized tropical shrub or tree native to South America, producing glossy, leathery green leaves and attractive edible fruits. The fruits are typically elongated, ripening from red to dark red or purplish red, with juicy, aromatic flesh that is mildly sweet to sweet-tart. The plant has ornamental value as well as fruiting interest and is suitable for warm gardens or large containers, where it can be kept compact with pruning.

Modern taxonomic treatments, including Kew/WCVP, place Eugenia calycina in synonymy with Eugenia involucrata, treating these plants within a single variable species. The name E. calycina is retained here for the horticulturally distinct plant sold under this name, characterized in our material by its generally more elongated fruits. It is otherwise very similar to Eugenia involucrata (E. aggregata).

Eugenia calycina prefers full sun to light shade, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil, and regular watering during active growth. It tolerates light pruning and responds well to cultivation in containers. USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 9-11; established plants may tolerate brief light frost, but protection is recommended, especially for young specimens.
