Astrophytum sp. (Star Cactus)

Astrophytum is a small genus of slow-growing cacti native to the arid regions of northern and central Mexico and parts of southern Texas. Often called Star Cacti, these distinctive plants are recognized by their rounded to columnar stems divided into prominent ribs that create a star-shaped outline when viewed from above. Most species are spineless or nearly so, and many are covered with tiny white flecks that help reflect sunlight and reduce water loss.

Despite the small number of species, Astrophytum displays remarkable diversity in form. Some species remain nearly spherical throughout life, while others gradually become columnar with age. Large silky yellow flowers, often with orange or red centers, appear near the stem apex during the warm season and are followed by woolly seed capsules. Astrophytum asterias, A. myriostigma, A. capricorne, and A. ornatum are among the best-known species, and numerous cultivated forms with unusual patterns or dense white speckling are highly prized by collectors. Astrophytum grows best in full sun or bright light, sharply drained mineral soil, and careful watering, allowing the growing medium to dry completely between applications. Suitable for USDA Zones 9-11, these cacti are especially well adapted to container culture, where their symmetrical form and slow growth make them outstanding specimen plants.
