Ixora casei (Everblooming Ixora)

Ixora casei is an evergreen shrub or small tree in the Rubiaceae family native to the western Pacific, including the Caroline, Mariana, Marshall, and Gilbert Islands. It is a true tropical species associated primarily with moist forest habitats. Plants develop a dense, branching habit with large, glossy green leaves and can eventually reach about 10-20 feet (3-6 m) under favorable conditions. Dense terminal clusters of numerous tubular flowers create a conspicuous display, typically in rich red to scarlet shades, contrasting strongly with the dark foliage.

Ixora casei grows best in full sun to partial shade and fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil with regular moisture. Like other tropical Ixoras, it benefits from warmth and humidity and may develop chlorotic foliage in strongly alkaline soils. It responds well to pruning and can be maintained as a smaller shrub or container specimen. Best suited to USDA Zones 10-12, it should be protected from frost and prolonged cold. Several botanical varieties are recognized, including I. casei var. casei, var. lanceolata, and var. medialoba. Its large foliage, dense flower clusters, and vigorous tropical habit make it a striking specimen for warm-climate gardens.
