Euphorbia lomelii (Slipper Plant)
Botanical names: Euphorbia lomelii, Pedilanthus macrocarpus
Common names: Slipper Plant, Gallito
Family: Euphorbiaceae
Origin: Mexico

Native to Mexico, Euphorbia lomelii (Slipper Plant) is a large shrub that typically grows 5-10 ft tall and is a great choice for those looking for a low-maintenance containerized garden. It is able to withstand dry conditions and, with moderate water, allows for a vibrant red, crimson and vinous flower growth. But be careful! Despite its alluring look, the Slipper Plant contains a milky sap which is irritating if your skin comes into contact with it.
In the right climate and growing conditions, the Slipper Plant can be gracious addition to any garden. Plant it in a sunny area with well-draining soil. A little bit of water every two weeks will be sufficient and the Slipper Plant will provide long lasting blooms from fall through spring and attract beneficial butterflies and hummingbirds. The Slipper Plant is hardy in USDA Zone 9-11.
In colder regions, the Slipper Plant can also be grown indoors in a container. Position the container near a sunny window, but be careful to avoid direct sun as this can damage the plant, and make sure your container has plenty of drainage holes at the bottom. To ensure your Slipper Plant thrives, water it only when the soil is almost completely dry and apply fertilizer monthly during the blooming season.
