Happy International Cat Day. Somewhere out there are more than 600 million cats, and roughly one in four households has willingly handed over its furniture, its lap, and its 6 a.m. sleep schedule to one of them.

Cats have figured out the whole arrangement without lifting a paw: they do not fetch, they do not guard the house, they knock a glass off the counter while maintaining direct eye contact, and somehow we thank them for it.

But here is the part that is not a joke: for every cat curled up on a couch, about two more are out on the streets with no couch to call their own. So today, while you celebrate the small furry tyrant who runs your life on four hours of activity and twenty hours of sleep, consider making room for one more.

Adopt, foster, rescue, or just help out a shelter. There are plenty of tyrants still looking for a throne. Soft paws, iron grip, zero remorse.
