Gardenia nitida, Shooting Star Gardenia

Rare gardenia from Africa with blooms sporadically year round. Covered with flowers when in bloom. Strong fragrance, unusually shaped leaves. There has been a long discussion regarding proper classification of Gardenia nitida and (or?) posoqueria. In some sources, they are considered synonyms. Both species have highly star-like tubular flowers with nearly intoxicating scent.
Gardenia nitida and posoqueria seem to be 2 different varieties. G. nitida is the most common kind, with slightly smaller leaves, and flowers coming in clusters. G. posoqueria has longer single flowers, and leaves are much larger, lush and elongated.

Posoqueria maxima

Giant Needleflower
Family: Rubiaceae
Origin: South America
USDA Plant Hardiness MapSmall tree 10-20 ftSemi-shadeFull sunModerate waterWhite, off-white flowersFragrant plant

The fragrant white to off-white flowers of Posoqueria maxima (Giant Needleflower) appear in late spring and are lovely against its dark green foliage. It is a small tree to 10-20 ft in height and spread. It is best grown in full sun to semi-shade with moderate water, but is drought tolerant once established. Growing in well-drained soil and in USDA Zone 9-11, Giant Needleflower is a distinctive evergreen addition to a garden. It's an adaptable plant that does best with regular irrigation and regular feeding during the growing season.

For those living in colder climates, Posoqueria maxima can be grown in a container and brought inside during cold months. When growing in a pot, it requires extra care to ensure it's kept well-watered and has adequate drainage. To help protect it from winter winds, a light layer of mulch around the base of the plant is recommended.

Posoqueria maxima does not require any special pruning, though it can be trimmed in the late fall or winter to achieve a desired shape. This South American native will bring beautiful, exotic blooms and foliage to gardens year-round and with some care, will provide years of enjoyment.
