Formerly classified as Aloe plicatilis, it develops thick, branching stems topped by remarkable fan-shaped arrangements of flat, strap-like, gray-green leaves. The leaves lack the prominent marginal teeth typical of many aloes and are arranged in two opposite ranks, giving each branch its characteristic flattened fan. Mature plants may reach 10-15 ft (3-4.5 m) tall and develop picturesque sculptural trunks with age. Upright flower clusters bear tubular scarlet to orange-red flowers, usually during the cool season, and attract nectar-feeding birds.
Fan Aloe grows best in full sun to light shade and exceptionally well-drained, gritty soil. It is adapted to a Mediterranean-type climate with cool, wetter winters and relatively dry summers and is sensitive to prolonged heat combined with high humidity. Established plants are drought tolerant, but occasional water during dry periods supports healthy growth; overwatering and poorly drained soil can cause root rot. It is generally suitable for USDA Zones 9-11, with protection from hard frost. Its slow growth, architectural form, and moderate size make Kumara plicatilis an excellent specimen for dry gardens, rock gardens, and large containers.
