Sapindus detergens or Ritha is endemic to the Indian subcontinent, grows well in full sunlight and semi-shade and requires regular water throughout the year.
The height of the tree varies from 10-20 feet. It grows well in a warm environment, USDA Zones 9-11, and can easily withstand temperatures up to 32F. It is shy of frost and cannot survive extreme cold. Thus, if you want to grow this plant in a cold region, it's best to put it in a pot. The pot should be placed near a window or close to a source of light to give it enough warmth and sunlight. Provide enough water to the plant and fertilize it lightly, at least three times a year.
The plant contains many valuable components and is often called an ethnomedical plant. Its bark, leaves and fruits have many medicinal properties. In parts of India, it is used in traditional medicine to treat various digestive and culture illnesses. Traditional Ayurvedic practitioners use it to cure headaches, skin irritation, indigestion and respiratory illnesses.
Ritha is a valuable addition to any gardening collection. Its blooms add a pleasant atmosphere to gardens, and its medicinal components provide added health benefits. With proper care and a warm environment, this plant will bring you years of enjoyment.
