Amorphophallus bulbifer (Voodoo Lily)

Amorphophallus bulbifer, commonly known as Bulbiferous Voodoo Lily or Pink Voodoo Lily, is a tuberous, seasonally dormant perennial in the Araceae family, native to the Himalayan foothills and parts of India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Myanmar. It grows in moist, shaded forest habitats and produces a single large, umbrella-like leaf, divided into numerous leaflets and supported by a mottled, fleshy stalk, typically reaching two to four feet tall. A distinctive feature is the formation of small bulbils at the junctions of the leaf divisions, allowing the plant to reproduce vegetatively. The inflorescence, often appearing before the leaf, consists of a broad, pinkish to pale purple spathe surrounding a shorter, fleshy spadix. Like many Amorphophallus species, the flowers produce an unpleasant odor that attracts pollinating insects.

Amorphophallus bulbifer prefers partial to full shade, warm temperatures, and loose, humus-rich, well-drained soil. Regular moisture is beneficial during active growth, but watering should be reduced substantially when the foliage dies back and the tuber enters dormancy. The species is suitable for USDA Zones 9-11, with winter protection or dry storage of dormant tubers advisable in colder regions. It is especially valued by collectors for its unusual inflorescence, ornamental foliage, and easily propagated bulbils.
