Psilanthus bengalensis (Paracoffea)

Psilanthus bengalensis is an exotic tropical shrub native to Thailand. It grows in USDA Zone 9-11. This large shrub variety is 5-10 ft tall, while the small shrub variety grows 2-5 feet tall. It has white to off-white fragrant flowers that are approximately 2 inches wide with 4 or 5 petals. The dark green leaves are 5-6 inches long and 3 inches wide. It is an attractive shrub that attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.

Psilanthus bengalensis can be grown in a pot if preferred and requires regular watering. In colder regions, it is best to move the pot indoors during periods of frost or snow. When kept in a pot, special attention should be paid to the pot drainage and the potting soil should be slightly acidic. The plant should be kept in a bright sun-drenched spot and watering should be done every few days, taking care that the soil isn't completely dried out before watering again. As it is a tropical plant, it should be sheltered from strong winds. Nutrient-rich fertilizers should be used to help promote strong growth and flowering. With the right care, Psilanthus bengalensis can be a delightful and exotic addition to any garden.
