Mitriostigma sp. or African gardenia is an evergreen small shrub, native to western and central Africa, with mysterious origin and unknown name. It grows up to 2-5 ft tall and has a bushy, spreading habit.
The foliage of the African gardenia is thick, glossy and aromatic. The fragrant white or off-white flowers, about 1 inch across, appear in clusters in spring and early summer, and attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Grow the African gardenia in a partially shaded area and give the plant regular water in moderate amounts. Wait until the top of the soil dries out before watering and never let the plant sit in waterlogged soil. This plant can be grown in USDA hardiness zones 9-11.
In colder regions and places where low temperatures occur in winter, it's possible to grow the African gardenia in a container. Use a well-draining container with a soil-based potting mix and place the pot in a bright spot that's protected from frost. When the temperatures drop below 40°F, provide extra protection by bringing the pot indoors. Water every 7-10 days, keeping the soil slightly moist. Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer every other week during the growing season.
