Semi evergreen tree. Leaves with 3 leaflets, wider than long, pubescent when juvenile, with prominent veins when mature. Sturdy, compact racemes of attractive red flowers are produced in late winter or early spring when the trees are virtually bare of leaves.

Flowers look like curious corals. Very large, broad leaves provide tropical look. Potted plants form large caudex and can be grown as bonsai. Rare collectible. This species makes a decorative garden plant, though it is rather slow growing and tender to frost.
