Dendrobium pierardii (Dendrobium Orchid)
Botanical names: Dendrobium pierardii, Dendrobium aphyllum
Common name: Dendrobium Orchid
Family: Orchidaceae
Origin: SE Asia

A very widespread Dendrobium species found through India, China and the Himalayas to Burma, Thailand, and the Malaysian peninsula. More often found in cultivation under the botanical synonym of Dendrobium pierardii. These plants, which have pendant canes (pseudobulbs), are easily grown in baskets or mounted. In the fall the leaves fall and the plant enjoys a rest, where in water is withheld. In the spring, the fragrant flowers appear from the fallen leaf points. As the flowers fade, new growth begins at the base of the previous years growth. The leafless canes often rebloom for several years. Well grown plants can reach 3 to 4ft in cane lengths.
