Common names: Velvetleaf, Canary Tree, Indian Mallow
Family: Malvaceae
Origin: Honduras

Canary Tree (Bakeridesia integerrima) is native to Honduras and grows best in USDA Zone 9-11. The mature plant is cold hardy at least to the low 30s F for a short time. It can be grown as a shrub reaching up to 5-10 ft tall, or as a small tree at 10-20 ft. It requires regular water, but is tolerant of both full sun and semi shade. Its yellow and orange flowers are beautiful and also attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
Canary Tree is easy to grow and care for, especially in containers or a pot. For cold climates and areas, it's important to move and cover the plant before the cold sets in. When the weather turns too cold, you should move your Canary Tree indoors, as it's not suited for sub-freezing temperatures. To ensure your Canary Tree grows and blooms to its fullest potential, make sure to water it regularly during the summer and maintain a light mulch around the base of the plant. Additionally, regular light pruning is necessary for maintaining its shape.
