About 450 species of evergreen perennials, chiefly of tropical and subtropical regions but with a few species extending into temperate areas. The Club Mosses are actually more closely related to ferns than to mosses. Ancient, tree-size Club Moss species were once among the dominant forms of plant life on earth, and were major contributors to our present-day coal reserves.
Lycopodium in the neotropics as well as old world tropics are the epiphytic plants. The plants of the old world tropics are in great demand and are beginning to make a comeback as cultivated plants.
