Origin: North America
Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirdsSeaside, salt tolerant plant

Clarkia amoena is an erect or sprawling annual with showy, 4-petaled, cup-shaped, pink flowers occuring in the axils of several of the uppermost leaves. The large flowers are highlighted with a splash of bright red on each petal.

Grows quickly, blooms heavily, dies with first frost. Can regrow following spring if seed falls on bare ground.

This delicate annual grows well in sandy or clay soil and also tolerates salt spray and alkaline soil surprisingly well. Clarkia amoena also tolerates seaside conditions.

Epilobium canum, Zauschneria californica, California fuchsia

Family: Onagraceae
California fuchsia
Origin: California
Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunModerate waterRed/crimson/vinous flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Epilobium canum is a native of hot dry places on the west coast of North America. Here it thrives in the nutrient-deficient sun-baked soil, to which it has adapted by evolving water and starch-storing rhizomatous roots and tiny silvery leaves that reduce transpiration. These adaptations make it the perfect plant for rock and gravel gardens, raised beds or dry-stone walls, where it will offer an abundance of the most brilliant scarlet flowers from late summer to November.

Fuchsia regia, Climbing Fuchsia

Click to see full-size image Fuchsia regia
Family: Onagraceae
Climbing Fuchsia
Origin: South America
Large shrub 5-10 ftVine or creeperFull sunSemi-shadeRegular waterBlue/lavender/purple flowersRed/crimson/vinous flowers

It is called Climbing Fuchsia, but, while it does need support, it doesn't twine or climb by tendrils, but rather insinuates itself among the branches of its neighbors. It can get quite large. Flowers are also large for a species Fuchsia, but not so large as many hybrids. They are long and narrow, and have red sepals and purple corollas. Not suitable for hanging baskets because it will become leggy in search of places to cling. But it does exceedingly well as a hardy garden plant trained to a fence or trellis.

Gaura lindheimeri, White Butterfly, Whirling Butterfly

Click to see full-size image Gaura lindheimeri
Family: Onagraceae
White Butterfly, Whirling Butterfly
Origin: Mexico
Small shrub 2-5 ftFull sunSemi-shadeModerate waterPink flowersWhite/off-white flowersAttracts butterflies, hummingbirds

Gaura is an herbaceous perennial that grows in a loose, bushy clump 2-4ft tall with a spread of 2-3ft. The stems are slender and wiry, and covered with tiny hairs. The leaves are spoon shaped, with toothed margins. The flowers are produced above the foliage on erect spikes, that continue to elongate throughout the extended blooming period of late spring until autumn.

This is a plant for hot climates and dry soils.

Gaura does best in full sun, but will tolerate partial shade.

It is tolerant of drought. It has a long taproot and requires a well-drained soil.

Propagation: White gaura is easy to grow from seed, and usually will self sow. You also can divide the clumps in spring to start new plants.
