It is particularly good for growing over an arch or arbour where the delicious perfume can be best appreciated.
Trachelospermum asiaticum Tricolor (Goshiki Kazura) is a lush, low-growing evergreen tropical native to Thailand. The fast-spreading groundcover can reach a height of 2ft and is characterized by its mottled and variegated tri-colored leaves, made up of a vast range of shades of dark greens, whites, and bright pinks. During the growing season, this plant can produce fabulous hot-pink new growth which gradually fades to a creamy green mix. It also blooms small yet highly fragrant white flowers that really make this tropical standout from other varieties.
This tropical species is suitable for growing in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. It loves full sun, though it can also tolerate partial shade, and does not require too much water. While it does not always fill itself with flowers, its ornamental foliage, hardiness, and pleasing variegation easily make up for this. Not only that, the fragrant flowers that it does bear make this a great choice in anyone's garden or landscape.
The Goshiki Kazura prefers hot climates but can withstand a short-term cold of 30F (or -1C) once it has reached maturity. For harsher climates, planting in containers is highly recommended. This way, in case temperatures drop, the plant can easily be brought indoors until the cold season is over. It is also a great option for armchair gardeners or those who do not want to bother with the high maintenance of a full garden, as the low-growing habit allows you to place it in containers and hang them high enough to be noticed.
