Philodendron tortum is an unusual evergreen climbing aroid in the Araceae family native to northern Brazil and Bolivia, where it grows in humid tropical forests and climbs tree trunks by aerial roots. Its most distinctive feature is the deeply divided foliage: mature leaves are split into numerous extremely narrow, twisting lobes, producing an airy, almost skeletal or fern-like appearance quite unlike the broad leaves of many familiar Philodendrons. As a root-climbing vine, it benefits from a moss pole, tree trunk, or other vertical support that allows it to develop its natural growth habit.

Philodendron tortum grows best in bright filtered light, warm temperatures, and a loose, well-drained aroid mix with regular moisture but good aeration around the roots. It appreciates relatively high humidity but should not remain waterlogged. Indoors, its narrow foliage and moderate growth make it particularly suitable for container culture where larger Philodendrons may require too much space. Best suited to USDA Zones 10-11 outdoors, it should be protected from frost and prolonged temperatures below about 50F.

Philodendron tortum - Fern Leaf Philodendron

Philodendron tortum, commonly called Fernleaf Philodendron, is a striking tropical collector plant with deeply divided, narrow leaves that look more like a fern or palm frond than a typical philodendron. New leaves emerge tightly curled, sometimes with coppery tones, then mature to glossy green.
Young plants stay compact and bushy, eventually developing a semi-climbing habit. Give it bright filtered light, warmth, good humidity, and a loose, well-drained potting mix. A moss pole or trellis will encourage attractive upright growth. Indoors, it can reach about 3 to 6 feet with support but is easily kept smaller with pruning.
Exotic-looking yet surprisingly manageable, Philodendron tortum is a great choice for anyone looking for an unusual, architectural houseplant that stands out from the crowd.
