The foliage is large, leathery, and glossy, with strongly defined parallel veins characteristic of the Melastomataceae family. In bloom, the plant produces dramatic hanging inflorescences - elongated drooping sprays of numerous small pink flowers often accompanied by showy pink bracts - that remain ornamental for an extended period and give the plant a distinctly tropical character popular in conservatories and warm climate plantings.
Medinilla multiflora grows best in bright filtered light, warm temperatures, high humidity, and evenly moist but well-drained organic-rich soils. It benefits from good air circulation and protection from harsh direct sun or drying conditions. Commonly cultivated as a container specimen in tropical and subtropical regions, it can also be grown indoors under suitably humid conditions. It is generally suited to USDA Zones 10 11 and should be protected from temperatures below about 40F.
