Botanical name: Sobralia sp.
Common name: Sobralia
Family: Orchidaceae
Origin: Central America, South America

Sobralia is a genus of terrestrial and sometimes epiphytic orchids native to tropical regions of Central and South America. These orchids are admired for their lush, cane-like growth and large, showy blossoms that resemble those of cattleyas. The plants often form tall clumps with reed-like stems and broad, pleated green leaves. They prefer warm, humid conditions with bright filtered light and evenly moist soil rich in organic matter.
The flowers are short-lived but appear in succession, creating a long blooming period. Each bloom is typically large, with delicate ruffled petals in shades of white, pink, lavender, or purple, and a striking lip that often contrasts in color. Sobralia orchids perform best in USDA Zones 10-11 and should be protected from cold drafts and frost. In tropical and subtropical gardens, they thrive as terrestrial ornamentals and can also be grown in large pots with excellent drainage.
