Podandrogyne mathewsii is a large shrub which can reach 5-10 ft tall with an equal spread. It is moderately fast growing.Podandrogyne mathewsii produces small red, crimson and vinous flowers throughout the year and these are followed by large winged fruits. The lightly-veined and oblong leaves are a rich, deep green and are up to 20 cm long. In semi-shade it will produce more flowers than when grown in full sun.

It is easy to care for Podandrogyne mathewsii, ideal for the beginner gardener. It should be planted in a position of full sun or semi-shade (best sheltered from wind) and should be given regular watering. As it naturally grows in the warm climate, in cold regions its best for this plant to be grown in a pot.

This species is fairly hardy and can be grown in USDA hardiness zone 9-11, though some protection from frost is necessary. Podandrogyne mathewsii is an excellent choice for adding a dramatic tropical look to any garden. It is perfect for hedging or as a specimen plant.
