Justicia carnea, also known as the Brazilian Plume, is a small plant that can grow up to 2 to 5 ft tall. Native to South America, it is an attractive addition to many gardens, especially those in USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11. Its flowers, which range in color from pink to white and off-white, attract hummingbirds and butterflies alike.

When planted in full sun and given regular watering, the Brazilian Plume will thrive. It will also grow in semi-shade conditions, but this will cause the flowers to be less prolific and its growth more sparse. During the winter in colder regions, potting the Brazilian Plume is recommended, as moving it to a warm and sheltered spot for the winter will help minimize any damage due to frost and low temperatures.
