Graptophyllum excelsum (Scarlet Fuchsia) is a large shrub or small tree, native to Australia. Growing 5-10 ft tall, in full sun or semi-shade, it requires moderate water, and as a reward offers beautiful, crimson to vinous red flowers that will attract butterflies and hummingbirds. It is slow growing, and drought tolerant, making it a great garden choice.

This plant is hardy to USDA Zone 9-11 and its mature plant is able to withstand cold temperatures at least to 30s F, for a brief period of time. When grown in cold regions, it is best to grow the Graptophyllum excelsum in containers, and to bring the plant indoors, or cover it with a thick layer of mulch in the winter months. When selecting a container, choose one with plenty of drainage holes and which is big enough to accommodate root growth. When watering, ensure that the soil is allowed to almost dry out between waterings.
