It gets to a height of 10-20 feet, and commonly as a lawn tree in tropical locations.

Native to Madagascar and coveted for its showy white or off-white flowers and beautiful green foliage, Delonix pumila is a small tree that makes a statement. Full sun, warm temperatures and moderate water is what this tree thrives on. If growing in USDA zone 9-11, this tropical and subtropical tree can be planted directly in the ground. For those in northern and cooler climates, Delonix pumila can be grown in a large pot and brought indoors during winter or kept protected outdoors.

The evergreen leaves of Delonix pumila are feathery and a deep, glossy green. The stems, branches and trunk are covered with a knob-like formation, called a caudex, which can be quite ornamental. As the tree matures, the caudex can split, exposing the inner spongy structure.

To produce healthy Delonix pumila, give the trees soil that is nutrient rich and slightly acidic. Plant in an area that receives plenty of bright sunshine and provide adequate space for them to grow and spread.

Watering should be done regularly depending on the weather, but overwatering is just as damaging as underwatering the tree. Monitor your Delonix pumila for signs of drought stress and ensure that water is applied during the hotter months. Fertilizer should only be used if necessary and applied during the warmer months.

Delonix pumila trees are hardy and resilient and require limited pruning and shaping. When pruning, ensure that the cuts are done as close to the branching points as possible. Always use clean and sharp tools to avoid infection in the wounds.

Delonix pumila is a stunning subject for bonsai, offering an easy and manageable style of gardening. Dwarf Flamboyant trees are quite popular and easy to care for. With proper care and maintenance, the tree will reward with beautiful flowers and foliage.
