Combretum microphyllum is a robust, deciduous climber, sometimes a scrambling shrub or small tree.

Masses of small flowers with bright red petals and long stamens.

It is similar to Combretum paniculatum and is sometimes regarded as a subspecies. It differs in its preference for dry and hot, low altitude riverbanks, while C. paniculatum is an uncommon species of moist evergreen forest margins.
