Leaves are a savoury addition to rice and tea substitute.

Established plants are very drought resistant.

Celtis australis (European Hackberry) is often planted as an ornamental as it is resistant to air pollution and long-living. Small, dark-purple berries are sweet and edible, and are extremely popular with birds and other wildlife.
