Aloidendron sp.

This small tree, native to Africa, typically reaches a height of 10-20 ft, and although not much can be said of its flowers, its foliage is rather stunning. Aloidendron sp. is known for its ability to survive in dry conditions, and so it can endure long spells without water. It can also tolerate full sun or partial shade, although it may be better suited for areas of the garden with some protection from harsh direct sunlight. Aloidendron is an evergreen plant covered in sharp spines or thorns, which provides a natural barrier against rabbits, deer and other animals and helps protect it in stormy weather.

Aloidendron can be grown outdoors in USDA Hardiness zones 9 to 11, but with a little attention, it can also thrive in colder regions as a container plant. When growing a container specimen, it is best to consider the soil and its needs for adequate drainage and water retention. Use a soil which is blended for cacti or succulents. Keep the plant in a sunny or partially shaded area, and water only when the soil has completely dried out. During the winter, water sparingly and avoid heavy doses of fertilizer. If you need to transport your container, be sure to use a protective covering as its thorns may snag or tear packaging and clothing.

In areas where temperatures dip below freezing, take extra precaution to protect the tree. Move container specimens to sheltered spots underneath covered patios, decks, and other overhangs. For the colder months, apply a thick layer of mulch or a few inches of bark to preserve moisture. If temperatures become especially cold, you may need to protect the plant with a frost cloth or wrap.

Aloidendron is a hardy and resilient plant, but it requires attention and care to ensure that it thrives in your garden. But with the correct planting and maintenance, it can be a striking and long-lasting addition to your landscape.
