Evergreen trees with flaky bark. Fairly common in evergreen forest, especially along rivers. It is an excellent shade tree that grows to 5-20m. This species is tolerant of strong winds.

Ceriops tagal (Spurred Mangrove) is a small tree species that grows to a height of 10-20 feet with a spread of 8-10 feet. It has dark green and glossy, narrow leaves with a pointed tip. The small white flowers are fragrant, and the green fruit is round and fleshy.

This species is native to Southern Africa and can also be found in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, Southern India, and Australia. It is flood-tolerant and salt-tolerant, and it can be found near the sea and in other wet habitats. It grows in USDA Zones 9-11 and is known for its ethnomedical properties that have been used for centuries to treat various ailments.
